Here on the bank of Machnow Lake, a memorial plaque from 2003 commemorates the Norwegian national poet Nordahl Grieg (1902-1943).

Grieg died on December 2, 1943 when, while working as a war correspondant, he took part in the British Royal Air Force’s air raids on Berlin, and his plane was shot down over Kleinmachnow. A wing of the crashed plane, which was salvaged from Machnow Lake, is today on display in the Norwegian Embassy in Berlin.

The Norwegian poet, playwright and war correspondent wrote travelogues from numerous foreign countries, though he is best known for the poetry he wrote during the war. He read his poems in London for the BBC/Norway Broadcasts, and so became well-known and beloved by the Norwegian people. His poem, “Til ungdommen” (For the Youth) from 1936, which had also been set to music, took on renewed importance in Norway after the terrorist attacks on July 22, 2011, when it was sung at church services, memorial gatherings and funerals.

Each year on May 17th, Norwegian Constitution Day, the Norwegian Embassy honors the memory of Nordahl Grieg by laying a memorial wreath at this site. The Kleinmachnow Jogging Club also sponsors an annual Nordahl Grieg memorial run.
